There are many adjectives with which you can qualify Chihiro Ogino, a 10-year-old girl who must move with her parents to a new home. During the trip to their destination, the family finds an abandoned amusement park in which unpredictable things begin to happen as night falls. Ghostly appearances, transformations in animals... Without realizing our protagonist has crossed into the spirit world, where she is trapped and where she must work among these creatures. Chihiro's adventure has just begun. Watch now Spirited Away and see if this wonderful story catches your attention.
We start with the famous Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi). July 20, 2001 was the day when the doors to the spirit world were opened and it seems that they will never close again, since since then the tape is already a classic from beginning to end.
In addition to directing, Miyazaki took care of the story, a moving story that leaves no one indifferent. Thanks to that (and many more things that we will analyze next), Spirited Away managed to become the highest grossing film in the history of Japanese cinema and be one of the best in the 2000s worldwide. Up to thirty-five awards have managed to win throughout its history, including the Oscar for Best Animated Film (it is the first and only Japanese animation film to achieve this award).
At the beginning of the movie we witness the impertinent behavior of Chihiro, a somewhat stubborn girl who deserves a good lesson. And go if you have it. The moment he sees with his own eyes the fate of his parents begins an adventure that leads him, not only to try to leave the place where he has gotten through hard work, but towards his own maturity and acceptance . We, of course, are witnesses of this adventure and we are surprised with it of the wonders that it sees and feels at all times thanks to a close and well-spun narration, thanks to a closed, magical story that manages to catch from the first moment.
Miyazaki demonstrates in Spirited Away with great mastery that nothing is impossible in terms of causing sensations to the viewer. Each sequence, each plane... Everything seems to have life and a symbolism difficult to understand the first time the movie is seen, so when you see it again, and clearly recognize those small details, you get to create a new idea about the History we have in hand. A story that knows how to move from the most absolute drama to comedy moments, without forgetting the romantic touches that we like so much. Without a doubt, a roller coaster of sensations in which Chihiro's courage manages to move us.
Another of the strengths of this film is the design of the characters, watch it online and see for yourself, because in addition to humans, we find the yōkai, creatures of Japanese culture that can range from ghosts to monsters with parts of different animals. Although some seem terrifying to the naked eye, we are soon shown that this is not the case, because all creatures have a kind side that is clearly seen once we begin to follow the trajectory of these characters. Despite each other's interests, we observe how something at first sight "ugly" can be totally adorable and tender to even the toughest.
As we mentioned earlier, Miyazaki does a great job in terms of the script, but also in terms of direction, because at all times we are kept in a spiral of events that do not allow a second of respite until well into the credits , when it is reviewed with surprise (if it is the first time) everything that has passed through our eyes.
When it comes to animation, Studio Ghibli once again demonstrates why it is one of the best animation studios. Beautiful and colorful scenarios, fluidity and preciousness. We cannot think of other adjectives to indicate how beautiful that element is. Of course, this joins the magnificent soundtrack composed by Joe Hisaishi and performed by the New Japan Philharmonic. These melodies, which only enhance this animated project, won the prize for best composition in the Mainichi Film Competition Award. Last but not least, the final song Itsumo nando demo is performed by Yumi Kimura, an artist who also collaborated with Miyazaki and Ghibli in Ambulante Castle.
