Jim Jarmusch leaves the bitterness in each script line of the movie The Dead Don't Die. Of course, it is a zombie movie with a strong fantastic component but, according to its filmography, it was already expected that it also had some social criticism: in this case, towards the ablation of society.
In this sense, there is a burden towards almost everything: the apathy of the people in general, the narrowness of the supremacist's turn, the fake news, the conspiracy theories, the young influencers... The director does not leave an untouched point, here he comes with everything.
The problem with the film is that it wants to cover this idea with the comedy mantle, without much success. Much more successful is his tribute to the cinema of George A. Romero, from which he borrows very concrete prints: from those hands coming out of the graves to the Pontiac LeMans that lead Zoe, Zack and Jack in this film, which is traced to comes out in the prologue of The Night of the Walking Dead.
Keep an eye on the way Jarmusch chooses the names for his characters, when he wants to make it clear that for him they are like photocopies.
The action of the film takes place in Centerville. There, Chief Cliff Robertson and Officer Robbie Peterson (Bill Murray and Adam Driver, from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, make up this delirious couple of representatives of the law, who so clearly remembers Fargo in his conception) prove alarmed how hours of the day are unreasonably lengthened.
On the other hand, the news begin to raise the alarm based on worrying data: the animals begin to show aggressive behavior and the dead leave their graves willing to devour the living, although they retain part of their memory.
In this way, the locals must leave their differences behind to fight and survive the zombie horde. Only one character seems out of this situation: the newcomer Zelda Winston (Tilda Swinton, from Doctor Strange), who works at the local funeral home and has baffled the neighbors with her strange customs.
It seems quite obvious that Jarmusch has taken The Dead Don't Die as a game, almost as if he was shooting with his colleagues a tape with an impromptu ending. The cast advances that we will enjoy many interesting cameos (Iggy Pop, RZA, Danny Glover, Selena Gome ...) in addition to exceptional protagonists (and simply the appearance of the great Bill Murray who already dabbled in the genre with Welcome to Zombieland and coincides with Carol Kane 30 years after the ghosts attack the boss, it is an incentive) but it is also that the filmmaker is allowed to make unamunian metalinguistic jokes allowing his characters to be immersed in a fiction. You cannot say that The Dead Don't Die is not an original proposal, even if it is not entirely satisfactory.
In any case, it is a very special film, aimed at a parish so concrete and limited, that it closes the doors itself to reach a wider audience. Neither you laugh out loud, nor do you pass fear, nor gore moments disgust you as if to leave your mark. Yes, there are possibilities of enjoyment if you are an unconditional of terror.
And he does not resist taking tip to have Kylo Ren on the side of justice, showing the agent's keychain with the Star Wars logo. Similarly, one of the gravestones in the cemetery shows the name of Samuel Fuller, director with whom he worked and collaborated in the documentary of Mika Kaurismäki titled Tigrero. You may like The Dead Don't Die or don't like it at all, but it is authentic, even in its bitter reading of today.
